The final scene from Thelma and Louise was NOT actually filmed at the Grand Canyon (even though that is where it takes place in the story). The place where they drive off the cliff was filmed at the Shafer Trail near Dead Horse Point in Dead Horse Point State Park near Moab, Utah. This is a canyon area (near Canyonlands National Park) overlooking the Colorado River a couple hundred miles upstream of the Grand Canyon. See link below.

They drove through a fence, off a dirt road, through a field then went for it. I don't even know for sure it was the Grand Canyon, it could have been several other canyons out west.

If I remember right, they weren't on a street. They had crashed through a fence and drove across a plain before plunging off the edge.
