Writing oz. for ounces?

Why are the letters oz used for ounces? I mean, we write km for kilometers and mm for millimeter so where does the letter Z come from?

"oz" is taken from the latin word for ounce, "onza."

perhaps a foriegn way of spelling it uses a z, not sure good question
