I know it needs a oil change.could it be that or the transmisson fluid low. it starts up and idles at the correct speed and the engine does get real hot.

Depends on if it is front wheel drive or rear wheel drive. If it is front wheel drive one of the most common causes is a broken motor mount. If it is rear wheel drive it could be U joints, or even the differential.

Does the engine over heat? Some cars shut off if they get too hot to protect the motor.

Sounds like the converter clutch solenoid, but that depends upon what year the car is.

check engine and transmission mounts.
front wheeldrive-check struts and cv joints.
rear wheeldrive- check u-joints, drive lines and rear-end.

check your universal joints if its a truck
