No, it's not true, except in the sense that it is always going to rain.....eventually.
The reason given to me as a child was that they lie down to keep their dinner dry.
Often you will see a field, and some of the cows are lying down, and others aren't. This means that some have eaten enough, and they are resting and chewing the cud. The others haven't quite finished eating yet.

most of the herd will lie down,but there are always a few "mavericks" that wwill remain standing unless the rain gets very heavy.by huddling on the ground,legs pulled under,the cows expose less of their surface area to the rain,affording some degree of protection in inclement weather.

i find that more accurate than the weather man on the news. if half the cows are laying down i give it a 50% chance of rain.

it doesn't rain when cows lie down. they sense the rain coming and lie down dont't know why though

No-I have asked farmers this andthey say cows lay down because they're tired or resting. It's an "old wives" tale.

This must be a wives tale ...Myself have never heard of it.... and i have raised cattle all my life.. .... No they do not just lie down when it rains...... for the most part they are affraid of storms... and bunch together for shelter....
