They know about where the zones are and they also have detectors that can tell them . as well as the weight of the mud coming out of the ground..

When they found gas, the end of the drill(above the sea/ground) would be lit with fire(as evidence of gas has been found). They must have placed a spark plug on the end of the drill to ignites spark(gas+spark=fire, just like your lighter) ..maybe...once every 10 minutes?
