A laundry basket, detergent, fabric softener, dryer sheets, and cloth hamper. It is a humbling gift, but also practical because it is something that she is going to be needing.

Get her a gift card to her favorite store or take her out for Ice Cream or her favorite restaurant.
It was my mom's birthday yesterday, I just took her out for ice cream and had her pick out something at the mall because she already has so many nick nacks I didn't want to get her one more thing to dust off. She picked out some nail polish, who knew?? I never would have guessed that's what she wanted.
BTW- If she doesn't appreciate the thought of whatever you get for her be glad she's moving far away and you can distance yourself from that kind of attitude.

I'd say nothing, but I understand how it feels to show up at a party empy-handed. Try to give her some cool magazines for her dorm room, make-up, dorm-shower stuff (squeeze soaps, flip-flops, etc.), and/or snacks. I bought a basket for a friend and filled it with cheapie stuff that I knew she'd like. Then, I just decorate it up a little bit with paper stuffing, balloons, etc.

Gift certificate to a restaurant she loves. College students often go hungry and school food gets boring.

I found a really cute picture frame at Bed Bath and Beyond I think, that spelled out Friends, and behind each letter you stick a picture. It was like a picture collage. She can hang it in her dorm.

A photo album filled with pictures of the both of you together and of your friends. It wont cost alot but the sentiment will be there and no money in the world can replace good memories.

Perhaps a gift certificate for a popular store (Bed, bath & beyond or Linens & Things) - if there is not one near by, she could shop online. Great decorating ideas for her future room!

I would say stationary... The art of writing a simple note or letter has been lost.... Also add a book of stamps to it. I mean she has everything else why not!

A scrapbook kit is a great present. She can use it to scrapbook her current, past and future friends, whichever she chooses. They come in great patterns and colors, give her some fun paper, a couple of accessories, and you have yourself a great gift that she will cherish for years to come.
