I just got a new BMW for my birthday and when I was looking at the website @ the accelleration times, the automatic was greater by a few tenths of a second. Even though my car has steptronic auto (which means I can use manual if I want, but w/ no clutch), is my accelleration time still not as good as my car's manual counterpart?

Is it because of the added weight of putting in whatever it is that has to be added for automatic transmission?

Automatic transmissions use a fluid coupling (torque converter). Manual transmissions use a mechanical coupling (clutch). There is some power lost with a torque converter as there is no direct connection between the flywheel on the engine and the input shaft on the transmission.

On paper the automatic transmission takes more time because the car has to make the move and not you - for the car the time is longer. However (and this is not calculated because it will vary from person to person) you might actually be accellerated faster in real time - because your car may make the change in gears faster than you as a human being can do yourself with the clutch (having know a few people who have not used there clutches well - I am glad they let the car to the work for them - what person wore out three in his car).

torque converter slip until the last gear change or two about 15% slippage. And extra weight #300 lbs vs. #150Lbs. Gear box weight and did you notice a different rear end ratio. Now with a 150 shot of NO2 you could hold the throttle down and the times with a automatic might be better.

If you're going to sweat "a few tenths of a second" just go ahead and spend 2 or 3 thousand dollars and convert it to manual.

OH, I forgot. It's a BMW. That means it will cost 8 or 10 thousand.

I suspect that most BMW owners are more concerned about looking "COOL" than a few tenths of a second. Right?

Get a second opinion. 3 days labour to change a transmission? You can do the whole thing yourself easily in less than a day, so what are they talking about? Sounds like they are trying to drain your wallet...

Automatics weigh more and you can shift faster with a manual
