If you go to a dealer and give them the vin # of your vehicle. I think you also need the title and your license to prove that you are the car owner.

Meaning if you do not have a key, can a copy be made?
Depends on the type of key.
If it's one of the high tech ones- probably not
But if it is a standard key, a mold can be taken of the lock and the key made from the mold. This is often a pricey proposition though, so it may be cheaper to simply get the locks replaced or re-keyed. Call your local dealership or locksmith and they will tell you what to do and, in the case of the dealership, if there is anything you need to bring.

I understand that if you take the car's identification number to your Chevy dealer he can make a key for it. The ID Number should be on the far right of the dash, readable through the windshield, when standing outside the front of the car. The dealer may want some proof you are the owner, like a title or registration.

It will cost you, and it is not quick.

depends on what brand of car it is. Do you have NO keys now?

If so, you might have to get the car brought to a dealership (was it a "smart" key.. with a remote door unlock, and chip, and all that wonderful stuff, or was it a 1972 chevy nova with just a plain old metal key.

My VW Jetta, if I ever lost ALL my keys, would require me to spend ~$250 at the dealership because they would have to order the key based on my vehicles unique "identification number" because it's a "smart" key.

A simple locksmith, however, could "re-key" a 'regular' car.

Yes, go to the dealership where it was purchased, in the documents they will have a key code. Sometimes in your warranty papers the code is there also. If a older car, call a dealership that sells the same model and ask the Parts Department what you can do

If your car is new enough you can call the dealership and give them the vin# and they can make an extra key. It cost about $30.00 or thats what it cost in 2000 when I had to do it.
