You will need a wireless router. The airport is a very good router but overpriced. Belkin makes wireless routers that are much cheaper and work just fine with the mac. Once you follow the router's instructions on hooking up your cable modem to it, all you need to do is turn on airport on your laptop and run internet connect,

If you have a router that has wireless and is setup right out of the box it is already ready to accept and wireless computer. You MAC in the top right corner of the screen has a picture of what looks like a rounded triangle. Click on it and you will get a drop down menu, select turn airport on. It will detect your network and any others in range, just select your and your off.

You allready have all of your network stuff so that is all you need apple computers don't need to connect to airport extreme or express, they can connect to most routers it is very easy to connect to an existing network just click the 5 bars at the top of the screen and if you see your network click on it and type in the password, if you dont see it click other and type in your network name and then the password. If you do get a new router in the future i would suggest the apple airport depending on the size of your home you would choose the airport extreme( has a printing port on it and a ethernet out jack. or the airport express, has a printing port and you can stream music to your stereo. On both you can add an antenna or another airport express.
