Death is one of two things, either the 1. start of a new existence or 2. the end of everything.
If death is 1. then it's an adventure the like of which you have never known. It's moving to a whole new plane of existence, it's like being born again. You have a whole new "life" ahead of you, therefore, it's something to be eagerly anticipated and nothing to fear.
If death is 2. then it's like going to sleep and never waking up. What happens when you're asleep? You have no thought or care about what is happening, you are blissfully unaware of the entire world. How many people are afraid of going to sleep? Even if you die in horrible, agonizing pain, once you go to sleep, poof, it's all gone.
My mind is ready. I'm certainly don't want to die yet, at 52 I have way too much to experience on this plane of existence before moving to the next or going to my permanent sleep.

On a spiritual level, I believe in God and I therefore believe that death is not the end. That there is a balance and that something lies beyond the scope of this crude flesh.
On a purely biological level, there is a terrible fear that lurks because, since I am made of flesh which is perishable, there is a definite attachment that doesn't want to be broken.
I'm not ready, since I'm a bit too young, but if it happens, I will prepare myself for eternity. But at times, my attitude mirrors David Lister of Red Dwarf: "If Death comes near me I'll rip his nipples off."

Death is inevitable. Everything that has a beginning has an end. "The goal of life is death.".
I am ready for it, I lost my mother and that's when I snapped out of a fantasy world. My mother's passing away has thought me that life is never going to be as it is now and that we all have to leave out bodies for good. It was more of an eye opener.

I wanted to comment on Min's answer, but I could not contact you b/c she did not have an email addy.
MIN --YOUR POEM GAVE ME SHIVERS.IT WAS VERY GOOD.I have been in nursing for 21 years and have been with so many people at their end of life. The elderly are just like the rest of us,they are scared too.I am a Christian too and yes I am scared. The elderly seem to have more faith then we do,b/c they grew up in a time when being Christian was "cool" But at the end they are scared too.
I think the WORST thing that people can experience is to be alone when they are dying.I have sat at many a persons bedside ,including both of my parents.I think it is an honor and privalage to be with someone when they go to Heaven. Many patients say they see the Angels in the room with them.On one occassion I had a family member say"I think mom is hallucinating. She says she is seeing the angels"I said "well from a proffessional point, you may be right. From a personal point.she is actually seeing the angel".Later that morning the patient drifted quietly to Heaven. My mom when she passed.sat up in the bed and said ,"I see your daddy" and slipped off to Heaven. My dad had died 3 years earlier. He wasn't afraid of death,he was afraid we still neededhim.I told him we will always need him,but it was ok to go,and he could be our angel. We said a prayer with all of us in bed with him. When we were done,we saw 1 tear fall from his face. And we knew the man that had been in prison for 13 years, the man that never went to church, was in Heaven.Mom was scared of death and had been all her life. She had 2 near death experiences as a child and said all she saw was darkness.I had a minister come to see her numerous times before she died(she lived 36 days after diagnosis of terminal).36 days later she was ready to die,she wasn't afraid anymore.
Even after all these years of experience.I am scared of death.Me,someone who has been with so many people while they went to Heaven is scared of death.

I am, I have seen many members of my family pass on. In almost every case, there was a brilliant light in their eyes, just before death. Anyway, it's gonna happen, why be scared? If you are, why ever open your eyes, or step out your door? Life is full of unknowns, death just seems to be the final one.

yes not everything is under human control. the natural death is cuased due to wear and tear of any or some of the human body parts. thus the body has to shut down after working for so many years.

Am I nervous about the "dying process"? Yes- there's a saying that my dad has told me- "I'm not scared of dying, I just don't want to be there when it happens". I hope for a painless death, but I'm not scared to die. I'm a born-again Christian, so I can be assured that I will be in heaven when I die. (And please, I realize not everyone holds the same beliefs as I do, so keep any sarcastic comments to yourself. Otherwise, any questions about what I believe are welcome. Thanks!)

I'm ready for the physical part of me- the body- to stop functioning one day, but not for my mind which I consider it to be my spirit or soul, for what I believe it never dies!
