I mean, can you actually walk (with assistance) through latent & active labor? I am considering this because I want to utilize gravity & walking as much as possible as well as be able to push more effectively.

I've had a full epidural with both previous pregnancies & ended up w/c-sec on last due to 'failure to progress' and was thinking maybe a lite epidural will allow me to stay mobile & be more effective. I just don't want to be 'bed bound' - - not really afraid of the pain, just wondering if it 'takes the edge off'

When your doctor offers you a walking epidural, they're just saying that they're gonna give you a trial size, so to speak, or a lesser amount of epidural than they would if you didn't want to walk around to speed up your labor. Because when you do receive the normal amount of epidural, your legs are going to go numb, if it works correctly. And yes, you can walk with assistance through latent and active labor. You'll only be walking around the labor and delivery floor, most likely, so you'll be able to check back in with your doctor/midwife. They'll check to see how far you've dilated, and when it's time to push, or if the contractions just get too intense for you to walk through them, you can come back to your room for your delivery.

that must have been what i had! haha. mine didnt take. the machine failed 15 min into it. so none for me! anyway, i think i know what your talking about, it doesnt deaden everything like a reg. epidural does. i would take lamaze or " birthing class" they teach you everything to expect. some hospitals can give you something to "take the edge off" which helps. but if you chance being paralize, i would go for the gold and get the regular epidural.

I know that if you get it too early it won't be that effective. Also, I thought that it really didn't help. I still felt terrible pain. You can walk with it, but it is very hard because of all the pain.
