Overall A-Rod is better.
This year, Ortiz is the more valuable player.
Why is A-Rod better overall?
1) He plays defense, Ortiz doesn't. Don't forget, A-Rod was a gold glove shortstop before moving to third base.
2) A-Rod is going to break Hank Aaron's all-time home run record. Ortiz would be lucky to reach 500 career.
3) This is really only Ortiz's 4th season as a top player. A-Rod's been a terrific player for over 10 years now.
4) A-Rod isn't juiced up. Ortiz's trainer got caught smuggling steroids across the US/Canada border for Juan Gonzales, and also has connections to Miguel Tejada (another steroid posterboy).

I really liked A-rod as a Mariner and a Ranger. I was never critical of him getting that big contract. If an organization is stupid enough to pay someone 200 mil to play a game it's not the players fault. Now as a third baseman for the Yank me's he's still a devastating hitter but not as great a fielder as he was as a shortstop, although he still is above average than most players in the majors at both hitting and fielding. That said, in comparison to David Ortiz, I have to say that A-rod has a major upper hand. There is no better clutch hitter than Papi but his fielding ability is no where near the caliber of A-rod. That said, comparing A-rod to Ortiz is a bit unfair since there respective positions are totally different. First base and DH are no where near the athletic ablity of shortstop and third base.

Batting average, they are practically dead even at .287. Ortiz has hit about 20 more HR's, 46 to A-Rod's 26. A-rod has currently, 93 RBI's, 88 Runs, and 11 stolen bases. Ortiz has 120 RBI's, 97 Runs, and 1 stolen base.
Based on offensive production, I'd say Ortiz took the cake with 46 homers for the season. A-rod is definitely a great all-around player but I feel like his production numbers have dropped this season and he's not reaching his potential. Papi has it good this season.

im going for A-Rod I am a Yankee fan but also A-Rod and had 48 homers last year and Papi had 40. In 2001 A- Rod had 54 homers. Besides A-Rod is good defense too. Ortiz is only a DH.
But still as Much as I hate the Red Sox i do like a couple of players like ex-red sox johnny damon and ex-marlin Josh Beckett

Well they both suck on defense, Papi is hitting better this days, but can't win you a ballgame playing small ball, stealing a base, or even robbing a double or a single, so A-Rod is a better all around player than Papi.

Alex Rodriguez. Not even close. He is nearly as good with the bat playing a position where there is less offense available. That makes him more valuable. He also plays the field. He has had a bad year this year, but he has decent range and would still be a very good SS.

overall this isn't even a question.
One is having a bad year, but may still end up with 800 HR.
The other is a DH who is having a good year
