Are we moving towards a full privatization of everything in a US system where capitalism is treated as a cure all (G. W. Bush has even contended that enviromental issues will be solved by economic progress/growth), or are we moving towards a more socialist model, as those in northern Europe where states guarantee social security, education and so forth.

In short, will governments move to guarantee more minimum rights, or will they embrace "capitalism" in hopes that it will improve the living standards of its people?

And is this a good thing? Where is what happening today?

Though Fundamentalism is on the growth, I'd argue that Atheism is growing just as quickly if not quicker. Hmm, this could be a good question, also.

The world is becoming more fundamentalist. Christians, Muslims, you name it. Americans are giving up their rights in order to gain more "security." The world is becoming a giant game of Age of Empires, me vs. you instead of cooperation between nations. Each disaster pushes us closer to the brink, and the way we've wrecked the environment, there will be more of those coming. Sadly, I see another dark age rising.

Edit:
I suppose I will have to politely disagree with you on the "atheism is rising faster" point. Ten years ago, atheism was rising; but no longer. Has evolution ever been under more attack (since the Scopes trial)? Fundamentalism has found an ally in Conservatism, Bush won the election by more than he did the Gore election despite a war that could have gone better (and the more wars there are the stronger the terrorists will get), and the world is following the US by toppling leftist governments and replacing them with Conservatives. Finally, every disaster will do what every disaster has ever done: bring people to religion. Fundamentalism is growing faster than atheism.

Good one... that is the question isn't it.. who will win, the big business ghouls or the social minded society ? Tough one to know.. I believe that capitalism can survive with socialism but Socialism will not survive under totalitarian despotism which is where the US model ultimately leads.. so I wish I knew.. I think a lot of people wish they knew. The reality is that privateering only leads to price fixing and gouging (Haliburton/Exxon/Enron) when the very rich control the basics, IE... water, air, ..food, we will at that moment fulfill the manifest destiny that Henry Ford and other industrialists have pined for since the inept of industry. And regardless of all the philanthropic banter.. the return of royalty and serfdom along with feudalism will once again be the status quo. This is a dark time or it is the beginning of something really wonderful... because we the majority far exceed the them (mega rich minority) and so we may well have to decide this for ourselves.
You will have your share of know it all's from both camps but ultimately ...only time will tell

I could be wrong, but it seems the world is making a much needed rightward turn. Conservatives politicians have won in Canada, Germany and even the Dutch have joined in recently. While Blair is a liberal, he has not been hostile to conservatives. Heavily socialist societies like France are straining under their devotion to silly outdated ideologies.

All sectors of the economy are being privatized, then purchased and monopolized by the "Very Big Corporation." This corporation uses various names to disguise just how big it is and to create the illusion of competition.

Monty Python warned us of this political phenomenon in the "Meaning of Life" but we have failed to recognize it.

This creates a new weird blend of socialism and capitalism. I would describe it more of a corporate-egalitarian society. And no, it is probably not a good thing.

More socialist we will one day have national health care for everyone. Religion is in its last throes and death throes are usually loud and violent. That is unless some great catastrophe hits then everyone will run to religion for support again.
