Haruki Murakami has heavily influenced by the Western culture, and he says he grew up reading the works of American writers such as Vonnegut and Brautigan.

When I read Murakami's "Norwegian Wood," I thought he might read John Irving's early works such as "The World According to Garp" and "The Hotel New Hampshire" by which Murakami was influenced.

I am not sure if Irving's writing style is close to Murakami's because I read Murakami's books in Japanese and Irving's books in English. Note that there are always differences in tones and styles between the Japanese original and the English translation.

I don't know about American authors, but if you are looking for styles like Murakami but also great stories, try Number9Dream and Ghostwritten by David Mitchell (an English author).
