We used to jokingly call it the Hubble Variable since it is always being revised. Our knowledge of the true distance of remote galaxies is very imprecise. I would not be surprised at all it they turned out to be off by 50% either way. But IMO a 50% error in the distance to a remote galaxy is no big deal; nobody will ever go there, so who really cares?

Wrong conclusion. First you have to ask yourself: is redshift really only due to Doppler effect? I am rather sure Compton effect has been involved and then Hubble's constant is hardly to be trusted at all!
