OK, everybody is proud of their Country! This is now the first acknowledged fact in the discussion. Second, your question is a good one. American support Israel because we have a long standing relationship with Israel and the Jewish people, but the relationship has not always been a good relationship. Two of Israels spies have been captured, tried and sentenced in the United States for example.
Currently, the Bush Administration has changed the relationship with Israel in the last six years by becoming a absolute cheerleader and a facilitate for Israel's right wing war mongers.
The US has now lost our honest broker credentials and will need to mend fences with the rest of the civilized world when Bush is finally termed out of Washington DC.

I think that in the last skirmish between Israel and Lebanon (hezbollah), the US tried to remain neutral and let the UN do their job.
Aside from that little peice of information, I would have to say that the US supports Israel because we can't support Lebanon, Syria, Iran, France or any government that supports TERRORISM.
