I'm a Music Industry Major, and we talk about this all the time. Sex sells, that's all that matters. It's simply what it is, business. It doesn't matter if the music has substance or longevity anymore; as long as they're making money, everythings gravy. If it weren't for morons buying the music, we wouldn't be in this position. Take for instance Paris Hilton; does she deserve a platinum record? Of course not, but there's enough 13-year-old girls out there to buy her one. Their are musicians out there still struggling to make it after 30 years of great music and thousands of shows, but SHE gets a record deal? Tell me why? Because she's "sexy" (not in my opinion). If you go anywhere else in the world, you won't hear the crap we have here. You actually see people playing INSTRUMENTS! But as for the U.S....poor U.S. We'll have to stay in this depression of useless, untalented music until music no longer exists as a whole. Then we'll retreat to old text and rote music as if going through another revolutionary time period... That's when we rebuild.

I respect that answer of the person which is inside the business with music. That's life: depends on which the side of the net you are situated. I'm just a consumer and I usually listen (in my car)only to my casettes I'm recording with only the music that pleases my ears. And I use in my car an auto-reverse casette player: I can listen to a casette for several times both sides before I change the casette. There are several radio stations that worth been listened to but I really dislike commercials...
As a listener I put together some music with my feelings at that moment... I like Enya, or other Celtic music bands, Hevia or John Denver, but I like sometimes old Uriah Heep, Deep Purple or Led Zeppelin songs; sometimes I want silence and peace of mind, sometimes I want some rap or even some force from Michael Jackson... My ears are the only device which part the bad music from the good music... I play the guitar, the piano, the harmonica and I really apreciate good musicians from that ones that use a computer... Even a stupid may press some keys on the computer and the machine is doing the rest of the work. But my ear knows and simply reject that "composer"...
Hope I was't too long...

Near the end of the 80's, I wrote a paper about the state of music, how it was all crap with no meaning or soul, that it would have no meaning to future generations and would not even be remembered in 20 years. Boy, was I ever wrong.
I agree that the pop music of right now sucks, it is all made to sell. Bands are created by fat, icky men that have auditions in their garage....and songs are written by an equation to sell. I hate when i like a pop song b/c i feel manipulated.
Do not give up hope...there is good music out there as there was in the 80's...it just takes a bit more effort to find it. Check out local bands and gigs and support them until things get better on a grander scale.

I completely agree with you and my own opinion on why it's happening is becuase of the corporatization of radio. Radio isn't about music anymore, it's about business. As a result, there's no incentive to create good music, the incentive is to create stuff that sells. What sells doesn't have to be good, it has to be catchy. See any song by Jessica Simpson as a reference.

Right you are. No offence if you like rap, but it's screwing up music. What happened to the days of great guitarists like Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, and Eric Clapton?

I agree. Today's popular music is 15 minutes of fame and you are out. That's why I stick to indie bands and local groups that are still real and have heart.

Rock and Hip-Hop are played out. Name me any song coming out these days and I can name you the song that it was either directly sampled from or that the style is so heavily ripped that it makes the new song irrelevant. It's a shame, really.
