My husband and I are considering trying to conceive in about a year. We just aren't fully ready yet. What do we do first? Should we talk to our Dr?

You can try to get an estimate on the days you are likely to be most fertile using the ovulation calculator on About.com: http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/gettingpregnant/l/blcalovulate.htm

I used the Pregnancy Week calculator myself when I suspected being pregnant earlier this month and based on the first day of your last cycle, you can get a likely conception date, and also when you're most likely to get an successful reading on a pregnancy test. ( http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/gettingpregnant/l/blpregcalc.htm )

I tested them on myself and it worked. The first day of my last cycle was July 22nd. I had unprotected sex with my boyfriend on August 5th. And some baby-making stuff happened, you know.

I didn't know at the time the 5th was a likely conception date. My cycle had been awkward in July, because it usually comes around the 1st-7th. That's when I went and used the Weeks Calculator to see when I could take a Pregnancy Test and saw that the 5th was a "Baby Making Day" and that I should be able to take a test on the 19th to see if we'd baked up one.

Well I took one of those Clearblue test, it works up to 4 days before your missed cycle. The results come in as Pregnant, Not Pregnant.

Mine: Pregnant.

My cousin is also pregnant and gave me her 1st cycle day. It checks out with her conception, current week count and due date.

I also did my friend Mimi the same way and hers match up as well. We're all 4 weeks apart. Mimi 13, Cousin 9, Me just turning 5.

Yes start with your Dr. and make sure all is well with both of you. If you are taking any kind of birth control then you need to find out when the best time is to stop taking it and if your really want to get down to brass tacks, you can buy your self and ovulation kit sold were you would find a pregnancy tests and it can tell you the best time of month for you to conceive.

Good Luck and Have fun trying

You have the luxury to plan ahead since you are already settled and married and you actually want to have a child at this time...
First I would say is to make sure your finances are okay that way you won't have to short yourself because of the baby and the added costs... Next get a check up a with your doctor and discuss the matter with him and ask for some recommendations... Finally plan some romantic evenings together with your husband during your fertile cycle... and enjoy... Good luck...

what I reccommend is this, go 6 months with only one income and see if you or your hubby will be able to stay home with the baby.
Then stop contraception, Also start taking pre natal vitamins at that time just incase =)
Just remember sometimes it takes years to conceive. it took me and my hubby 5 yrs to conceive than after that when my son was 5 months old I was pregnant again!

Start by speaking with a reputable OB Dr. and he/she will recommend when you stop your contraception therapy, (if any) and discuss with you both at what time during your cycle you will be most likely to conceive. (Fertile)

Once the time frame is plotted after stopping your contraception and allowing your cycles to regulate, and knowing when you are ovulating, obviously intercourse will follow.

Depending upon where you are in your ovulation phase, you can increase your chances of getting one gender or the other, based upon when the sperm is introduced to the ova.
(Boys usually in early ovulation, Girls in late ovulation)

Good luck!

Wow! So many supportive and awesome answers. I just wanted to suggest a couple really great sites that are helpful to me (I'm trying for #2).
This site helps you track your cycle, mucus, fertile days..even sends you email reminders, and if you're wanting to wait for a while it will be nice to have a history to look at and chart with: www.mymonthlycycles.com
another site that helped me: www.tryingtoconceive.com

Good luck!!!

Probably a good idea. I don't imagine your doctor giving you much of anything, advice-wise. It's still a year away from the attempt.

I think it'll come down to "Have sex in a year."
