I have 2 cats and 1 small dog and 2 children. So we get the pet stains, and the kids with their markers or glitter glue stuff. We made the mistake of getting a very light colored carpet and it shows everything!

Royal makes a great steam vac to clean carpet
you will probably have to go to a special vacuum shop to find them
not at wal mart
don't buy those
it runs in the $300 range
make sure you get a extra warranty on it
it will be worth the money
for stains in the carpet use OXY CLEAN POWDER
follow directions on the tub for carpet
or get
Woolite carpet spray on cleaner
a excellent product
use their steam vac cleaner too
it does wonders on any carpet stains
Woolite has come out with a whole line of products for carpet
use them and you wont be disappointed

I agree with the other answers to get a steam cleaner to maintain your carpet but if you have pet urine stains you have more to deal with then just cleaning. To rid of any pet odours you will have to rip out the under pad where it is stained and piece in new under pad but first clean and disinfect the floor where the urine has soaked through. While you have your carpet rolled back clean the back side stained area's before you relay it. Now you can clean and disinfect your carpet. For this I would have a company come in that has a "TRUCK MOUNTED" steam cleaner, these are real steam cleaners not hot water extractors that use water from your tap which is not steam. Get them professionally cleaned first then you can maintain with a store bought hot water extractor which work fine for general purpose cleaning and spot cleaning just don't over wet, vacumn up the water good or you can end up with other problems.

take any carpet shampoo a wet hand towel and a hot iron and a scrub brush...pour shampoo on the stain place wet towel on stain then place very hot iron on wet towel..leave on for a few seconds then take off and scrub with brush this will remove any stain...if it doesnt work the first time then repeat the above...this does work...i have yet to find a stain i cant remove this way...
But you will need a carpet cleaner for the whole carpet..but use a hot iron first to remove the bad stains...

my moms dog cut his paw and got blood all over her white carpet and it was left on for over a week and i got it out with iron..

Buy one of the carpet steamers - we bought the Regina steamer and it was well worth it - especially with 3 dogs - get to the spots as soon as possible after they are made and they will come out.

Get yourself one of the little Bissell Clean Machines. Around $65 at the home centers. I got one about 3 months ago, and it just works great for touch-ups, and the high traffic areas.
