Jealousy, of course...
Also...many Black people have a lot "invested" in that old notion that "we can't get ahead because the White folks won't let us". So when a Black person...especially one from "the hood"...works hard and succeeds, it threatens other Black people's excuse for their own lack of effort and success...and symbolically let's White folks "off the hook".

It just depends on the attitude of the person, if they walk around with their nose in the air like their S#!% dont stink, then that can create negative energy, but if they are just a well rounded, positive, goal seeking person, the only thing another person would be feeling is jealousy. And that is true in all societies btw.

Good question! In my opinion, I feel it is very racist.
But, it is pure jealousy. You made it! Be proud of yourself!
People sometimes look down on people who succeed or excel no matter what race, but I have heard this many times. You would think that no matter who it is....people would be proud of you for obtaining an eduction! I am proud of my two children for finally getting those degrees! Good luck to you!!

Its pure jealousy and nothing more......But they way I see it....every single person has the same opportunity to change if they really wanted to. Stay in school...learn...try to make something of your life...get a job and keep it......don't give in to the peer pressure to do things that you know are wrong. Its not cool to break laws....You and you alone have control of your life.

I don't think that statement is true at all. There are many successful African Americans that are respected by their peers and are role models for children. There may be some that are considered Uncle Toms' for selling out their principals to succeed in a white business world, but I assume they are the minority.

I feel sorry for that girl "Justine" who answered your question. It's people like her and the mentality she has that forces so many black people not to try. Why would anyone think like that on purpose? Can't they see there's more to life than living in a sh*tty neighborhood and "protecting the streets"? What's wrong with people???

That person is not considered a sell out.
The only time a person is considered a sellout is when they forget where they came from, forget their friends that were there for them. when a person succeeds and forgets everyone who was there for them before that, than that person is a sell out.
