The basic mammalian body plan (genetically speaking) is female. Like the embryonic development of all mammals, human babies have tissue that differentiates into nipples. Much later in embryonic development, the activiation of female sex genes creates mammary glands associated with the nipples. Male sex hormones inhibit mammary glands, the nipples are unaltered. Although male mamary glands will never grow past this point, an imbalance in sex hormones later in life may induce a man's body to grow layers of breast fat. The pink color is merely an indication the the skin is thin and well vascularized - it's the color of our blood.

If your nipples are really red, I'd see a doctor.... and if you don't what nipples are for, you need to ask your mommy.

Bite, Nibble, Lick, Suck. Repeat. That's why I need them...I don't know about you.
As for women...the mammary glands lie there and (although most women don't breastfeed anymore) they produce the milk needed for newborn nourishment.

Women need them for breastfeeding. Men need them to break the monotony of their chests.
