it is different for everyone and it happens different for everyone. some people have to grow into it ... some people it just hits them as if someone turned on a switch .... but when you are truly in love you will know it in your heart ..... be aware of mistaking lust for love .... the feelings of excitement can be the same ...... but being in love with someone does where off over time ... when you truly love someone it goes much deeper than that .... becuase when you truly love someone it cuts you down into your soul and makes you cry out to god in heaven for that person

I would offer you this observation---you will probably "love" many men/women in your lifetime. Several of the answers already given here are accurate in that it is a unique bond that exists between 2 people. However, that bond can be found with many, many more than just one person.
"Love" as I think you are questioning, is the strength to remain faithful to one person, if you have committed to a relationship with that person, whether it involves going steady, marriage, living together etc. Loving that person would also involve learning to compromise, to be very vulnerable, to compromise, to enrich your relationship on a regular basis, to compromise, and actually however the two people decide to define their relationship. And did I mention, to compromise is so important.
Good luck to you...don't believe the movie kind of love, or the romantic kind of love is all there is and that once you meet this person, you will never be interested in anyone else...yes, you will feel the enthralling, passionate, 'I can't live without this person' kind of sensations, and it is wonderful...and it is unique to each person...but the kind of love that you base your lifetime with another person upon, is a relationship love that you must define and re-define so that both people feel fulfilled.

First of all, love is a choice. You choose to love a person. Love is an action not an emotion. When you love someone you have their best interest in mind. You think of that person first and you think of them all the time. You an't eat, can't sleep, and you want to be with that person all the time. That's not to say that life will be a bowl of cherries with that person. We all have problems to deal with. But when you really love a person you find it's worth the effort to work through the problems rather than leave the person. The best love comes when you least expect it and aren't looking for it. I waited fifteen years for Keith to come along. He's anamazing man.

Well, if you have to ask, you're probably not.
But to answer your question, when you're in LOVE, you are basically shedding inhibitions and conditionality. You would DIE for this person - at the same time, you are a whole person and know that and don't NEED the other person for happiness.
When you truly LOVE someone, you understand that he/she is not a perfect human, but he/she is perfect for YOU. The bond that exists will grow until the day you die.

Most people I think would tell you that "You Just Know."
I believe this is true. Here is a few "tests" if you will:
The person you love holds the power to make you cry but would never intentionally use it.
You would sacrifice to be with the person you love.
You wish the person you love success and happiness, no-matter-what.
Just a few ideas.. there's alot of ways to know I guess, and like everyone says.. you just know.

You just know. You get that feeling in the pit of your stomach whenever they are around like OMG! He/she's wonderful! And you can't wait to be in their arms again. You cant imagine your life without them and you know they feel the same way. You just know....

you just know, when you are really in love.
say if you've dated a few guys and you never felt anything really special, then you date another guy, he makes you feel so close to him and that you want to be with him all the time and vice versa, you know he's the one for you.

No sure fire answer to that question. Each person is different.
You know when you know. That's all there really is to it.
