1969, however the official year the group was broken up was April of 1970 with the release of Abbey Road. What happened was growing tension amongst the group due to the death of their Manager Brian Epstien, and as well as the Yoko Ono thing driving a rift between Lennon and McCartney, however the spark of the powder keg really happened with the release of Let it Be. McCartney was fed up with the new managment style of Allen Klien as well as the alterations on Let it Be(the album) by Phil Spector, so he sued the group, and thus legally disbanding the beatles as a legal entity. However the possiblity of a reunion has always been around and if a band reunites occasionallly theoritcally they're just retired and not disbanded, so you can say the Beatles were really disbanded in 1980 with the death of John Lennon.

Correction
The Beatles were around for a short renunion of sorts during 1994-1996 for the release of the Anthology album (3 albums) During this time the only beatles around were obviously George Harrison, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. so in essance you can say the Beatles broke up unofficially with the death of George Harrison in 2000.

But do not dwell on the Break up and the aftermath of the Beatles, remember them for what they were, and their music for what it is.
