Here's some alternative parties to the Rep and Dem parties. By the way you can always register as an independent voter unaffilated with any party.
Libertarian Party - everyone should take care of themselves
Natural Law Party
Green Party
Independent Party
and many more

The Constitution Party and the Liberatarian Party both lean heavily towards supporting and governing according to the Constitution as opposed to the liberal governance of the GOP and the extreme liberal position of the Dems.
Then there's the Green Party, who I don't know much about but i think they lean left and are environmentally conscious.
You don't hear much in the media about other political parties because the same companies who control the Dem and GOP parties also own the 6 remaining media organizations. They only root for their GOP/Dem team, so Americans unfamiliar with the Constitution based parties are left with only one choice when it comes down to election time.
For example, Constitution Party leader Mike Peroutka and and Libertarian Party leader Michael Badnarik were both arrested when they arrived to attend a 2004 debate between Bush and Kerry in Texas. They each had tickets, yet they were placed in the back of a police car and driven away from the event. There was a big fuss about it among third party supporters but the networks never reported it.

The best alternatives to dems and reps are the very people who have no desire to work with a bunch of bloated, pointy headed do nothings. You are stuck with a certain type of person representing you, regardless of the party affiliation.
But, not to disappoint you, I'll answer what you asked. In my humble opinion, the Objectivists or Randists are best suited. They still believe in individual achievement rather than compromise--which unfortunately flies in the face of the collective mentality needed to be ruler or ruled.
Libertarians are not suited because they, like their dem and rep colleagues, don't believe that when right compromises with wrong, right HAS to lose

The problem with third parties is that current election laws strongly inhibit them as far as money. They are set up so that only Republicans and Democrats are guaranteed to receive federal money in campaigns. It is going to take one super rich person at the right time to try and get a third party to be successful.
