It's so weird that you would ask this question! I was just being nostalgic and researching the Colonel yesterday! I had the opportunity to meet with the Colonel himself a few times! I even have the pictures to prove it! I held a close associatiion with "Kentucky Fried Chicken" for many many years. It is still one of my favorite things in life, but it has to be cooked correctly and be fresh! I love it!
Coincidentally, when I was young, I wanted to grow up and work at a "KFC" and learn the recipe so I could cook it for my family for the rest of my life! lol I never did learn the recipe, as it is a closely guarded secret, but I have eaten enough chicken and come to terms with that! ha ha ha Most of my life, people have been asking me what the recipe is and they don't believe that I don't know! Rumour has it that it was written on a wooden door at one of the Colonel's original diners, but it is not known if that door is still in existence. Extensive testing has been done and not come up with any conclusive results. the only identified ingredients are flour, salt, pepper, and MSG. There is also some debate as to whether there is any more than these 4 ingredients; some say that there was only 10! A big factor for the success is the cooking process, which cannot be replicated at home. At some point the cooking process was changed to a less expensive method and the gravy was mass produced; this was around the time that the Colonel and the word "Fried" was taken out of the advertising! It was later determined that the Colonel was the best selling point for the food chain, even though up until he died, he would voice his disapproval of the changes to the gravy and cooking method that the big corporations had made. I totally agreed with him!
I could go on and on as this is one of my special areas of interest! As you could probably tell! LOL! I still take pride in knowing the original taste and quality of the chicken and gravy and that I am able to honestly tell the difference of "original" and any others that are conjured up! If anyone ever tells you that the chicken and gravy is not as good as they remember it, they are absolutely correct! It was at it's best before the big corporations took it over!
All in all, Kentucky Fried Chicken is still one of the best known products around the world and rightfully so!
Thank you so much for this question! It is the best one ever and I have answered a lot of questions!

A home economist named Gloria Pitzer was expert as "cracking" secret recipes (for example, she found the "Orange Julius" mixing recipe and was quite aggressively gone after by the Orange Julius legal department for her discovery.)
I heard an interview with her on a Dallas talk show back in the late 1980's. She said that when Colonel Harlan Sanders was still alive, she interviewed him and asked what the 11 secret herbs and spices were.
He said he wouldn't tell her directly, but would give her a hint: they can be found on any supermarket shelf.
After a lot of searching, Gloria finally cracked the Colonel's secret: the 11 secret herbs and spices are exactly the same herbs and spices found in GOOD SEASON'S ITALIAN SALAD DRESSING MIX.

Couldn't tell you. But I can give you this bit of information that may or may not cause you to rethink eating at the Colonel's again.
The reason Pamela Anderson and PETA are so down on Kentucky Fried Chicken is because when they slaughter their chickens before shipping them off to their restaurants, they actually drop them in hot oil while they are still alive. This causes the feathers to come off easily. Can you even imagine what that must feel like?
I know I will NEVER eat at the Colonel's again. How about you?

A writer named William Poundstone “claims to have obtained a sample of the coating from a KFC employee, and then ... had it analyzed by a laboratory. What he found was shocking—only four ingredients: salt, ground black pepper, flour and MSG.”
