I know that you are not supposed to take HOT baths during the first trimester (although the birth defect risk is minor), but I do enjoy a nightly bath. I would say my bath starts hot and quickly cools as I add cold water. My bath is never steamy and I don't let myself get to the point where I sweat. However, short of getting a special thermometer, I don't know if it is HOT or WARM. Maybe what I feel is warm is really hot or the other way around. Again - Does anyone know of a physical guideline that I can follow - presence of steam? sweat? something?

I am pregnant and have a hot tub at home. I was told I cannot get in because of the heat - I didn't know think it was only for the 1st trimester, I thought it was throughout the whole pregnancy. I do love hot baths and still take 'em as long they are not too hot. You can really tell by when you put your hand or your feet in the tub and know if it is too hot or warm-hot. I suggest just trust your senses-feeling the water. That's what I do.

I am 38 weeks pregnant and i still take hot baths every so often. They are saying preclude "hot" that means overly scorching baths considering you are body is extra touchy. Not to mention your body temp is already raised with the aid of easily being pregnant. You could rationale mind injury to the fetus if you shock your system with either too cold a temp or too hot. However that is extra along the traces of a hot bath or a freezing dip. My son loves after I take baths and hot showers, He'll honestly push his entire again to my entrance when I let the water run over my stomach. They prefer to be heat, it is a traditional instinct. You are little one will need to be simply as heat when they're out of the womb. Which is why so many infants like to be wrapped tightly and held. Do not stress over the little matters. The books fairly can scare you if you happen to take heed to them all. Plenty of this will come naturally to you. Just trust your instincts and what the child is telling you they want. Good success!

I was told that I shouldn't bathe in water that is hotter than 101-102 degrees Farenheit FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. A few minutes was okay, but if I was going to lounge for awhile, I needed to keep the water cool. I think the big key is doctors wanting to be sure that a mother's core body temperature doesn't elevate too high.. which could be dangerous to the mother and/or the fetus.

An easy way to make sure you're not taking too hot a bath: run the bath water over the skin of your inner arm, between your wrist and elbow. This skin is very thin and VERY sensitive (this is also a GREAT way to make sure the water you draw for your baby's bath isn't too hot). Since our body's temperature runs between 98 and 99, anything slightly warm to the touch in this region of your arm will be in right around the proper temparature range for a long bath.

I've always loved to take scalding hot baths and showers... so taking such a 'cool' bath wasn't to my liking... but I got used to it. :)

If it doesn't make you sweat, it's fine.

For our home water birth we were told to keep the water in the birth tub at about 101 to 102 degrees. You just don't want it to raise your temperature too much because it can then effect the amount of oxygen getting to baby through the placenta.

Water hot enough to change your skin color is too hot. - It's not so much the birth defect risk that they are concerned about- it's the risk of infection and warmth and wet are two factors that aide in spreading infections.

You're not supposed to take hot baths through your entire pregnancy.
