Rust and carbon are both fine materials and have probbably passed the fuel filter and are clogging the fuel pickup system. change the fuel filter and the dump out the fuel bowls of the carb, use a little spray carb cleaner, put it back togeather and try it again you might get lucky and not have to tear the carb all the way down and rebuild it.

Sounds like the victim of poor maintenance. There are a couple of things to check. Make sure the engine is timed right, and that you don't have a worn out timing chain. These are the major causes of what you describe. Also excessively lean mixture can cause this, but check the first two items.

If it back firing just on one side, it may just be valves not seating well on that side of the engine. Timing? Good luck.

...you might want to replace that fuel filter with a new one.

Also, check your spark plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor... could be a spark issue as well.
