You're opening a real can of worms here- on the one side, people who want discipline from their child (but don't enforce it and don't get it) and think a timeout is enough, and heaven forbid anyone ever should spank their child, and then on the other side the people who shouldn't be parents who actually abuse their kids and call it "correction."

If the parent is physically and verbally abusive, cutting, deriding instead of constructively correcting in addition to stopping the behavior, they don't need to be parents.

If you do spank, watch out for the Department of Social Services. They'll get a report from your neighbors, your enemies, your ex, or some nut-job who thinks all spanking is barbaric and they'll want to "step in and help you with your 'anger issues.'"

When they're old enough to know right from wrong AND disciplined enough to choose right because of being corrected and steered in the right direction enough times, they're too old to spank. When they're young adults, it's probably time to quit.

But, I've never seen an unkempt garden grow good fruits and vegetables. You have to pull out the weeds, disturb the soil a bit, discourage and remove the unwanted growth.

As a rule of thumb, if a child is disciplined early enough and is shaped, then they should not require a spanking after six or seven. Now there are many who feel that spanking is wrong at any level at any time. This is unfounded. Yes, we do have a problem with abuse, however proper parenting does not require you to lynch or flog your child.

When I say spanking, I am referring to the occasional tap on the thigh (to get their attention), or in severe cases, when the board of education is placed on the seat of learning.
