It's about 2 years old, just noticed the smell this week, smell it even when it's off. Smells like paint fumes or something.

Ok, so I called HP and they charged me $45 to tell me to take it to a shop (actually they told me it would be more cost effective to just buy a new one).

I'm pretty sure it's coming from the computer and not something else. It doesn't seem very hot. Both fans on the back run when switched on. Haven't vacummed - should I try this?

If it's a new computer, don't worry about it, it's just the smell of your hardware heating up and sort of "breaking-in." If your computer is a year old or more, then it's an overheating problem. You better fix it before the computer blows up or catches fire. (Which is very unlikely. What's more likely is damage due to overheating,,,...)

Probably bad.. I don't think anythings ever good when a weird chemical smell comes out of electronics. Call a computer specialist or HP.

it depends on how strong the scent is usually laptops have that new computer sent lol but something could be burning or melting it could be your battery acid leaking it wouldn't hurt you to get it checked (although it may hurt your pocket). If it is 2 years old just get a new one better computers are out now so it's up to you

You smell it even when it's off? Are you absolutely certain it's the computer and not something nearby?
