When babies are born they think that the mother and themselves are one. Then the baby starts to realize that he or she is separate and a process called 'individuation' starts.
A girl normally continues to identify with the mother, but also develops a self, unless there is some critical situation which prevents that and then the girl might transfer to identify with the father. In this identification is imitation, "I want to be like... "
A boy also thinks, at irst that he and the mother are one, then begins to realize that he is 'different'. Normally then the boy would identify with the father and start to follow his example, but sometimes this is not possible, because either the father is absent, or for other reason the boy is unable to identify with his father as a role model. This might result in the boy being kind of stuck with continuing to use the mother as a role model. This can, in turn, turn into a vicious cycle, as the boy imitates what are considered female behaviors and the father and other boys and he are less and less able to identify and imitate each other.
I know both boys whose fathers were absent and they became more comfortable with girls, who are heterosexual, and some who are homosexual. I know both girls whose mothers were not role models so the girls became 'tomboys' who are hetero, and some who are homo sexual.
I'm not sure what you mean by a healthy life with one like themselves... you mean friends? it is possible, yes,, and a very good thing to have healthy relationships with the same sex,,, is that what you mean?

Why do some identify themselves with same sex or vice versa? A healthy life is not dependent on your sexual preference, it's all in your mind. I feel a healthy mind leads to a healthy life.

Responding to the PERSON doesn't nessecarily mean you are responding to the GENDER.
It might be a matter of personality, or roles within society that one is attracted to.
Happiness is possible - just look beyond anyone who tries to make such a thing a negative issue.
