When the hibernate is done the system copy all the detail in the RAM to the Hard Disk. It also set a special Bit Patten BIOS and it the OS Boot Record. When the system is booted again OS check the corresponding area and Load the Hibernation detail and all other content are copied to the RAM.

All the contents in the Ram is dumped in to the hard disk when it says "preparing to hibernate". So when your computer wakes up, it knows the exact location it has stored the contents and takes it and puts it back into the Ram.

That should be it!.

Not only RAM saves the current running application and data. A part in harddisk called virtuall memory saves all the data and application that are running. While in Hibernation, All the data and application are writen to this space. that is why all the data and application are intact even while the ram Power is OFF.

Hibernation requires atleast 250 MB on your hard disk. thus it stores everything on hard disk and not on RAM, by the way if you check the hibernation option in power options in control panel u would come to know
