Jeez, I get a little paranoid, too!
I do the weight machines at the Y and am enrolled in a Hapkido class (Korean self-defense) so I can know what to do if I'm ever attacked physically (as in, fists and/or feet), with a gun, or with a knife. ( and so I'm strong enough to get the heck out of there when I'm done, lol)
I am also 5'9" and unusually strong for a seventeen-year-old girl
( I have a naturally aggressive side that is scary if you tap into to it and ur my opponent *mwahaha*)

Have you ever tested your dogs to see if they really would protect you? My husband and I were in a bad car accident a few years ago and I was pinned in the car. My dogs (2 Scottish terriers) stood on me and wouldn't let the firemen in the truck. They also protect my children. Do you feel safe with a loaded gun? Take some shooting lessons so you feel secure with the involvement of a gun. A tazer might help you also. How about a house alarm? Car alarm? Keep your car keys with you, my truck sets off anywhere inside a mile. If I hear something outside, or I'm uncomfortable in a parking lot, I hit that red button.

I live in the country, however, NO ONE is safe, If I had to depend on the police (sherriff) it would take up to an hour for the sherriff to get to my house. Soooo, How do I protect myself?
I keep a LOADED S & W Model 16 .357 (law enforcement issue) on one side of the bed and a LOADED SigSauer P229 40sw(law enforcement magazine load) on the other side. When my husband is home, he keeps his loaded Para .45ACP on his side and we have a 120lb German Shepherd Dog guarding the foot of the bed. I always carry. My husband and I both travel a lot for work and have reciprocal carry permits. I take handgun courses taught by the military and State Police constantly. I have been trained in tactical firearms handling. I practice weekly. And I PITY the fool who tries to mess with me, my husband, my dog and my property.
I got my first gun over 20 years ago when I had an incident with a male co-worker. The Trooper (state police) that helped me suggested I learn to shoot and get a gun. I have been a defender of the 2nd Amendment since. The NRA also has great program like REFUSE TO BE A VICTIM,specializing in training women in self defense. And even though it's a NRA program, it is NOT about guns. It's about self defense with or without a firearm.

I also live on my own and I have 2 large dogs who I know would protect me with thier lives. I am not really paranoid though because I live in Canada in a small town... no one has ever attacked a woman in my town and I really am not to worried about it happening. I do have a large knife that was a gift from my Dad it is really only decorative for me as I dont use it but if a situation arose I have it in my room. In all honesty, I am more paranoid about a bear ripping the siding off of my house or scattering my garbage all around, I dont really think of people attacking me often... we really dont have much crime around here what crime we have is teenagers who break into peoples houses and steal change, alcohol and cigarettes... LOL someone broke into my friends car and stole her Canadian Tire money, but left her walkman...lol how funny is that!
I mostly rely on my dogs to protect me and in thier presence, I have never felt unsafe. I don't know who would be stupid enough to come into my house with nearly 200lbs of teeth and fury on the other side of the door... so I feel quite safe and I am not one to even lock my doors consistently because I feel quite safe in my Canadian town where the number one offence is poaching...

When I was growing up... I was in karate. And also having older cousins that allowed me to wrestle hard with them... and having a teatherball has my punching bag helped. I really dont worry about that right now... cause umm... I dont know why people dont mess with me. Probably cause I have someone around at all times... or the fact people know better to try. Cause they wont get anywhere... you know? I learned since I am a small person... and it looks like that I cant depend myself... that knowing how to use your body and muscles to depend yourself from a larger person. Have to be smarter then the perpetrater. I personally dont like the stung gun... or pepper spray... but I also dont like guns... cause I have training to fight with my hands. Try kick boxing... That sounds like fun!! lol

I do not put myself in a position where I am vunerable. I do not go out to the store at night or walk at night. I am lucky that I do not have to worry about my personal safety where I live. But no place is immune from danger

You have all your bases covered it sounds like.
You can also take karate or a self defense course too.
That is what I did, but I have yet to use my skills.
