My son's first coherent word was "duck" and he said it at 8 months. He has a rubber duck that he plays with at bath time and he loves it. His next word was book. He loves that hard "k" sound. He hasn't said mama or dada yet though. He just turned 9 months.

I don't have a baby, but my mother said that my first coherent word (that she could tell that I understood) at 7 months was "chocolate". Apparently, my two older brothers would stand over my crib all the time, waving chocolate bars in my face saying, "cho-co-late! cho-co-late!"
Ironically, I could care less for the stuff ;>

My son's first proper word was "NO" at about 8 months -he had been saying dada and mama for some time and could say 10 differernt words when he was just under a year.

Bubbup (meaning button). My son said it at about 7 months (wish I'd written the date down). What's really freaky is that that was my first word too--we even pronounced it the same!

He is now 17 months old and can say:
-da-da
-ma-ma
-hot
-whats-that
-kitty
-Casey (our dogs name)
-Hello
My daughter is 7 months old and hasn't said any words yet. She Just makes a lot of noises.
I hope I have helped some.

Ahh-goo. (not a real word, but the most common for a baby)
My baby said it on the first day.
If you are thinking about a real word, and they are consciously saying it (not just making mama, dada sounds), then that can vary significantly from baby to baby.

my daughter is 10 months and her favorite word is uh-oh!
She drops something on the floor and then says uh-oh! and goes to pick it up again.
Then she drops it and the cycle continues.
She can also say dada, mama, and papa.
