I toss any monthly bill like, gas, electric, etc. Reciiepts for purchases like a TV or furniture I keep until the warranty runs out. Anything that I use to complete my tax returns, I keep three years.

receipts and statements - 6 months to a year
utility bills - couple months tops
cancelled checks - one year

all of these documents don't need to be kep for very long. if the case comes up where you need them, you can always request them from the company. stuff like cancelled checks or receipts you should keep for awhile simply for the fact that if a dispute comes up, you have the physical evidence needed to stake your claim. your utility bills you shouldn't need to keep at all really since they will have records of it in their own database. so long as you get stuff like confirmation numbers for payments then you'll be okay.
