The Gaia Online Towns! feature is basically a chatroom where you move around with your avatar, pick up stuff, catch bugs, etc... Not really a game though, more of a chat room. There's also houses that you can visit, and stuff. It's got a lot more than that, including forums, an avatar system, games, and a lot more....

A bit childish, played this back in middle school... But if you're around that age, this is probably good for you. Same method really, chatrooms, different backgrounds in chatroom. The earning of "gold/clams/money" in order to buy stuff for your avatar (a head), and stuff.

Besides Club Penguin, Habbo Hotel, and Runescape, try Awesome House Party. It doesn't work for me, I don't have shockwave on my computer, but it should be what you're looking for. I've been loking for the same type of game lately. I finally knew that there was nothing else, so I downloaded this game:

and it's virus, spyware, malware, whatever...free. It's totally free, and it even works on OLD computers. I recommend it. =)

You mean a game like baseball, played outside, where you can walk around and talk to real people and there's nothing to download?

Dont know any, but great games that are cheap these days are Diablo and Counter-Strike. Elder Scrolls is good too.

unless you buy the software online or in store
even then you have to download updates
