I have acquired a road burn (deep scrape from sliding on the road) on my leg. It is about six inches by four inches. I have been spraying a disinfectant on it and then wrapping it in gauze and a bandage. Is there a better way I should be treating this?

It isnt very deep, just deep enough to make the skin look very raw, like the first few layers have been scraped off.

As long as you've sprayed it with disinfectant, you should just let the air at it. That will expedite the healing.

Such a wound will heal better with less scarring if you use Bacitracin antibiotic ointment and a non-adherent dressing to cover it. Change the dressing every day, clean the wound gently with soap and water before re-applying a new dressing and ointment.
Leaving such a wound open to the air will result in scabs, scars and opportunities for infection. Keeping it covered and moist will facilitate healing and minimize scarring. Should take a week to ten days to close completely, at which time the dressings are no longer necessary. The skin will remain pink for up to a month before it is completely healed.
