I completely agree. I'm a registered Republican, but haven't voted the party line in all the elections I've voted in.
I considered myself a centrist, and I lean over the line to the left or right depending on the issue. Some people, such as Howard Dean on the left and Pat Robertson on the right make me nervous.

"Being an extremist" isn't an inherently terrible thing. Heck, it adds a little spice to life. ;) It's what you do with that extremism that makes it dangerous.
I've known some who have held "extreme" views, yet are able to hold a civil conversation & respectfully disagree with you. I've known some with "extreme" views who have been able to not let their views prevent them from doing their jobs fairy and well, or affect their abilities to be good neighbors, parents and friends. (We might not encounter these polite & thoughtful extremists very often, especially on the Internet, but they're out there.)
"Extremism" can even be a source of new ideas, and an open mind can learn from the process of examining those ideas, even if the ideas are outrageous and erroneous. I've learned a lot from the process of debating with "extremists": it has helped me learn more about why I believe what I believe.
It's when "extremism" messes with "power" that I worry. And when "extremism" is the loudest voice in the public discourse, something has gone terribly wrong. The vast moderate middle, the REAL "silent majority", must stand up, stand together and be heard! :) The "extremists" can only have power if we give it to them.

You bet it is. I actually was a democrat at one point. After hearing what the far left was saying I could not support them anymore. Now I am a liberal but lean a little to the right. I don't know if it's the little kids that play on the political board that make it seem like the far left is totally out of control or not. I am not saying the republicans (far right) don't have someproblems. I do not beleive that all democrats ar cowards and won't fight for their country. I don't like hearing that from republicans. I guess where the rep. won me over the dems. is because far left wingers trash this country and I could never side with a party that would do that.

What do you call extremist? I was one of the demonstrators that marched against the war in Iraq before it started. But no one was listening in the White House. I and most of the people who marched were not only morally in opposite to this War, but we were also against it because it was going to fail. Wrong war, wrong place, wrong reasons and in would do exactly what it is doing to America, breaking us financially and spiritually and killing our young Troops for a lost cause.
Lord, the people who cheered this War on have a great deal of self examiation and explaining to do! And many of the talking heads who were cheer leaders at the invasion are now singing a different tune having now reversed themselves and said it was a mistake.
Well, guess what, this war is being mismanaged as we speak right now, and the cheer leaders that keep questioning my patriotism are wasting lives and time covering their ears with both hands. THIS IRAQ WAR IS A MISTAKE AND IT IS NOT GOING TO GET BETTER! We need to find a way out and quickly if possible. Biden's ideas sounds reasonable coupled with other ideas like making a base of operation in Kuwait. Nothing I have said is extremist in nature. You folks that cheered Bush on need to hold him back now until we can get out of this mess.

Yes, the extremist from both sides need to all be put on an island with a limited supply of food. Let them fight to the death. I'm pretty sure, we'd get rid of that fool John Skerry, lol.

Extremists on either side will never have a significant amount of power in the US, so there is no fear of them serving the US wrong. Unfortunately, they still have the ability to speak.

I am 100% behind you. The majority of the people are in the middle, but no one is listening to them because the extremist are shouting louder.

Depends what your views are. I would say extremists only ever serve a small minority.
