Actually a Polar Bear's fur is transparent with a hollow core....it only has the appearance of being white because it reflects light. Each hair is made of keratin...the same material our hair and fingernails are made of. This is actually to the Bear's advantage because the hair absorbs ultraviolet rays from the sun, which in turn warms the skin. It keeps it warm in all that snow.

Yep, white fur, black skin.

Though actually some are rather dirty yellow colour.

Now you mention it...there was a green one and a purple one, though one had some sort of algae problem as a result of high heat in the zoo he was living, and the other was using purple medication for a skin problem.

Polar bear skin is black to absorb sun energy. It's fur is actually transparrent to let the sunlight through. It only appears white because of some reflection.
