Taking mylanta or antacid helps to neutralise the acid in your stomach. However, it doesn't solve the problem. Try taking many small meals a day, instead of the usual 3 large meals, to help your stomach digest the food properly while reducing the chances of over-taxing it.
Spicy food and oily food have also been known to aggravate the problem.
If you're overweight, it's advisable to bring your weight back to within the normal weight range.
If you've done all you could, and the problem persists, you might want to consult a gastroenterologist about it, as it might signify something that requires medical attention, such as tumours or intestinal blockage. Also, ensure that you don't actually have an intestinal or gastric ulcer......as this can also cause gastric reflux.

The treatment is very easy, inexpensive, safe and effective.
1. You have to stop the use of coffee, tea, soda, smoking and alcohol. Especially in the morning.
2. Take Trifla(A combination of 3 fruits) from Indian Grocery store and drink it with water before you go to bed.
3. Drink 2-4 glass of filtered water early in the morning. It will clear you stomach(Excessive acid)
4. Also do some aerobics as tolerated.

I've had heartburn all of my life. Contrary to what people say about "Don't eat spicy foods etc", even mild foods will give me heartburn. I finally opted for OTC Prilosec. I am now cured and I suggest it for your ailments.
