thanks for the replies...i did do some heavy duty vacuuming, and took a tentative look at the filters before i started today... so guess that is what it is. giving it a try now.
will choose a best answer when time is up.
thanks again for tips, will be more careful next time!

hi, firstly ensure there are no blockages anywhere in the pipes or near the dust cylinder, then remove the filter and wash it with soapy water, let it dry properly, once again check all the machine for blockages and put filter back. you should find it is working ok now.
if you have a cylinder model you can wash the bit where the dirt goes. this always helps the perfomance too, once again use hot soapy water and let it dry properly. good luck xxx

My Dyson has been working for nearly 8 years without many problems. You have to take the air filter out and clean it every now and then, and you have to empty the dirt you have vacuumed up into the bin.
I know these things sound obvious, but it took me about 2 years before I realised that you had to empty the dust out of the collection chamber. I only recently discovered that you need to replace the filters (about a year or two ago), and bought some new ones.
The instructions that came with the new ones said you just need to clean them in soapy water, and let them dry. (rather than buy new ones) I have done this now and it makes a difference.
I don't have many carpets though, and I find a brush and a shovel work just as well. (which might be why it is still working so well)

Flip it over and see if anything is loose on the bottom. That's what I do with my newer one. Sometimes after taking it downstairs one of the filters gets pulled loose and it looses suction. Clean the filters. And remove the collection bin and clean it out really lgood. Take it outside and whack it a few time. You could also call the dyson help line... don't know the number off the top of my head but you could look it up on the internet. I love my Dyson... it's the best vaccuum we've ever had.

i have 1 but it wasn't the vacuum who lost suction it was the turbo brush that broke it lost the elastic band which makes it turn round, sorry i cant explain it any better than that, but i got a new turbo brush and the suction was as good as it was before. Its not the hoover its the parts that break down on mine all the time because i have a golden retriever and the hair even got into the motor and wrapped it self around it and blew the fuse, but that happend only once, hope that helpes.

Here is the web site to dyson. i just happen to have it handy because my Dyson went tit's up about 3 weeks ago with the same problem.
There is a customer support section for which ever country your in and they can help get it working. Give them an email ya got nothing to lose at this point and most of it is plastic so recycling it is not too difficult if you have to.
Remember: Vacuum's suck or at least a working one does!!

Ive had Dyson`s for years. Take it to bites and check there is no blockage anywhere, if that fails go to your nearest curries and buy a new belt for it. They cost £5 for 2.
Hope this helps

replace all the filters and check in the inside of the colletion bin. sometimes the dust and debris gets clogged in there and can't get out. I mean WAYY up in the receptacle bin right around where the handle is. best way is to either shake it and bang it or just hose the inside of it out and let dry. that should get rid of the clumps of gunk stuck in there.
