It will not print if black cartridge is empty unless you have a selection in your print setup for 'composite black' - mixing the three colors of the color cartridge to make black as others have said.
My printer, HP Deskjet 3930, will print composite black if I remove the black cartridge.

It shouldn't print - it should give you a message saying that it's out of ink. If you're in a jam and need to print something in a hurry (that's why your ink ran out - always happens this way), you can change the colour of the font to dark blue and that should print (provided you have a colour printer). If you don't have a colour printer, go to your local office supply store or wal-mart or something and get more ink. You can also tell if it's out of ink if you take the cartridge out (follow manufacturers instructions) and give it a little shake. If you don't hear anything, you're out of ink. If you do hear some "sloshing", you have ink and your problem is with either the printer or the computer sending the print command to the printer.

It all depends on the printer. Some will do as the other poster wrote and mix the colors to get 'black', but other printers will stop when any one color runs out to protect the print heads.

correct it, some printers wil mix the colours to make a black type colour.
but most printers will bring up a message saying replace ink cartridge. or the printer will move the print head to middle for it to be replaced.

Depends by each printer model.
Only few printers are able to do black from colors.

Not if you are using a cartridge that is empty. You can still print in color but the black wont show up.

Yeah, you have to replace the cartridge if it's completely out, even if there's no black in what you're printing, or else it won't print.
