I think the species you saw was the Black and Yellow Argiope (Argiope aurantia)
It is a very common spider in the eastern United States and Canada, they are a member of the Orb Weaver family (Aranaidae). Commonly referred to as garden spiders, these beautiful arachnids are commonly found around houses and will often make their webs suspended between bushes and tall flowers.
They are non agrressive, and have a mild venom that is of no danger to humans.
I have raised these beautiful spiders before in captivity.
Here are some photos:

There are also some other beautiful species of Argiope, here have a look at some of these.

I hope this answers your question!

My God! You've found the rare Silver Dollar Window Spider!
Just kidding. You need to get a key to be sure. There are thousands of species of spiders.

It might be a Tree Spider, which looks like a smaller version of a tarantula. If so, they are harmless.
Until you know for sure though, please be careful with handling the spider. If you are close to a Nature Center, why don't you take it over (in a jar, of course) to see if they know what kind of spider it is.
Have a lovely rest of the day.
