I had unprotected sex around 3 weeks before getting the injection, and did a pregnancy test which was negative. I've never had the injection before, and am worried as I am bleeding and getting some stomach cramps. Is this normal???

Thanks for your answers, don't want anymore, as already have two children, who are miracle children, so the no periods after isn't an issue. Thanks

I've been on the shot for years and it's wonderful for me. Takes awhile for it to regulate when you start, maybe you'll have your period sporadically for awhile, but once you get your second shot things should regulate. I have no period or PMS and even lost weight - yeah! However, my sister tried the shot and had her period for months, so it's not for everyone. I'd be patient though and see what happens. I wouldn't do any other birth control myself!

The bleeding happens to some people. It might last for a long time or only a week or two. I was on the shot for almost 5 years. I did not have my period the entire time ( only the first week or so ). Not having a period was the only plus. The aftermath is worse. In all it is not worth it. It made me gain weight ( about 10 to 15 ponds per year ) I exercised like crazy but something in that shot messed up my system. This could be different for you. I am just telling you what happened to me. And the emotional stuff was CRAZY!!!! I would only recommend this drug to sex crazy women; because the chance of having a child on it is very slim. I have been off of it for about 2 years and just getting my period back. Just BE CAREFUL!

I believe that it would be normal because I was more irregular on the depo shot then without it. It really messes up any time of "life" you would want to have....you are always going "spot" so good luck and I wouldn't ever get it again. I conceived while on the depo shot also to add to my reasoning
It does cease it for a while because because its kind of already telling your body that you are pregnant thats why you shouldn't bleed, but you probably will spot, if the bleeding is very bad then yes you should go back to the DOC that gave you the shot....
Also dont listen about the patch...its HORRIBLE i hated it it would rip off my skin when I had it on my behind, and I went to school with a girl that wore it on her arm like an idiot, anyhow, Im on Ortho Tri Cyclin LO and I love it Ive lost 35 LBS...Good Luck!!!

This is normal I was on it for 7 years and had some bleeding during the first month or so after that my periods finished. It's proberbly just your system settling down to a new form of contraception, don't worry the bleeding and cramping will go if it persists after a few months then go to the doctors to make sure it is suitable for you but give it chance. Good luck.

Yes it is normal for the first year on the depo to have midcycle bleeding. There is a new form of depo out called depo-provera subq 104mg. This has a lot less side effects than the 150 mg IM injection. You can also administer this one in your thigh and you can administer it yourself if you have to. My patients have seen less weight gain, moodiness with the subq. The subq is a much smaller needle because it only goes under the skin, not in the muscle.

I am most concerned that you had unprotected sex!! Daft! But anyway, speak to your doctor. I had the depo injection and bled constantly throughout the 3 months so do not panic. Just get professional advice.
The other down side was it killed my sex drive so you might not need to worry about unprotected sex in the future!? LOL
Seriously though don't do that - its not big and its not clever. x

you should always an only have the depo done, whilst bleeding.
in an ideal world, on the first day.
with the depo, sometimes you can bleed till the next jab or even longer, an there is nothing you can do about it, i had it done after i had my baby, i bled for 6 months, sometimes heavy, sometimes light,
cramps weight gain, an loss, from one week to the next.
and a sort of p.m.t type of thing going on alot.
if in doute see your nurse, but i am sure she will tell you, sometimes this happens.

been on that myself and made me put on about 2 stone, and when you come of it ,it can take up to 2 years to get your periods back ,no good if you want to start a family in the next few years,it can also cause you to bleed within the first injections, wouldn't recommend it even if it is the easiest.

it is normal to bleed abnormally on the injection, somepeople bleed loads some dont it just depends on how your body reacts to it, but if your worried speak to your dr. or go to a+e.... but if it is like your normal period amount of blood then im sure you dont have anything to worry about.... if the test was negative then i doubt very much you were pregnant,
