I know that most other phones/services I've owned charged each AOL Instant message like a text message and I was wondering if the same applied with a Palm Treo as well.

Yes, it's going to cost you no matter what phone you have.
The only bypass to this is if your phone has WiFi capabilities. If so, you'll be able to send AIM for free because you'll be using the internet and not your service provider.
