I say Jeter.

Ortiz plays half of a game, how can you choose him. Great hitter I will agree. How can you judge someone on defense who sits on the bench?

Although I love David Ortiz and what he does with his bat statistically, he does not play a position in the field and so I love what Derek Jeter does only because he is the cog/catalyst for the Yankees. He has had a great year offensively challenging for the A.L batting title as well as producing many timely hits driving men in scoring position while playing outstanding defense for the Yankees. He's so low key and a wonderful leader in the clubhouse, something that A-Rod lacks I believe. I don't think confidence breeds success in Jeter's case...Actually success breeds success and I truly believe he will win A.L MVP honors when all is said and done!

As much as I don't care for Jeter, I think he will end up winning the MVP this year. Ortiz has put up some great offensive numbers, but I just don't see him winning the MVP (especially if the Red Sox miss the playoffs). Jeter is probably the favorite because he's put up some of his best offensive numbers this season and he's been the most consistent player on an injury riddled Yankee team this season. Without him, the Yankees would probably be in third place this season...

Whatever! Big Papi is the best out there in the American league. It wont matter if the Red Sox don't win the division. He's putting up huge numbers and without him the Red Sox, and my fantasy baseball team, would be up sh*t creek. So what if he's a DH? What if a pitcher with a 25 - 3 record won the MVP? He doesn't pitch everyday. What if a reliever won it with 60 saves? He's not pitching everyday. Sure they have the Cy Young award but would you have a problem if a pitcher also won the MVP?

Derek Jeter? He's not even the best player on his own team. There's A Rod and Mariano Rivera. I'm not a Red Sox fan and I am not a Yankee hater either. But to date, David Ortiz has been the man, hands down. His position, DH, demands that he produce at the plate. He's not being paid to field balls or make diving catches in the outfield. He is being paid to hit balls out of the park and to bat runs in. So far so good. MVP! MVP! MVP!

The MVP goes to person most valuable to his team, I like Ortiz but the Red Sox may not even make the playoffs, Johnny Damon and Derek Jeter may just cancel each other out. The catcher from Minnesota Joe Mauer is having a great year and so are the Twins I would say Joe Mauer. That has been the toughest division all year and the Twins had only one bad month.

Hmmm

I'd go with Jermaine Dye or Derek Jeter.

At the end of the season, if Boston finishes a game back or makes the playoffs, Ortiz will win the MVP.

If Minnesota gets to the playoffs, it may even be Justin Morneau or Joe Mauer.

But I think it will be between Jeter and Dye.

CARLOS BELTRAN FOR NL MVP!!

Ortiz in a second. And if you're going to put Jeter in the discussion for his great season, put Manny in there too. With the exception of batting average, which is pretty close, all of Manny's stats are better.

Oh, and if Jeter beats Papi, there is no logical reason for it. They are both leaders, both teams will come close to the playoffs, and even though Jeter plays defense, he is so weak to his right side that it costs his team runs. Jeter makes some spectacular plays, but his range is mediocre.

I'd also like to mention a few players whose names aren't usually in the discussion but should be. Travis Hafner of the Indians and Vernon Wells of the Blue Jays are both having fantastic years. They are on losing teams, but if A-Rod could win in 2003, why not one of these guys in 2006?

In all honesty, though, the only guy I'd be satisfied with if Papi came in second is Joe Mauer of the Twins. not only is he invaluable to the pitching staff, he's leading the lead in hitting, and just having a monster year. Justin Morneau is also doing great things for the Twins.

There's obviously a lot of guys I haven't mentioned, but in the end, nothing beats Big Papi. While the team flounders, he thrives. He will carry them in September. Whether they make the playoffs or not, Papi is the only reason they'll come close. And that's what an MVP does.

LOL Of course it would be Ortiz. The "time" spent on the field doesn't matter. Think of it literally Most VALUABLE Player. . .Who is more valuable to a team than Ortiz to the Red Sox? There is NO better clutch hitter in the game. And to me, valuable sure means you know he can come back and win every game for you!!!

Morneau... he puts up monster numbers at the plate and plays some pretty solid defense. Not to mention a batting average about 30 points higher than Ortiz'.

No DH should ever win the MVP. It was stupid to even make the DH position.

I would have to say big surprise Fabio here it comes David Ortiz!!!When you are leading the league in home runs and RBI's and you have been for awhile now, you deserve credit where it's due.I do not give a crap that he sits out all the time, hes a good f***ing hitter, that guy is a God to baseball!!!!DH or not, Big Papi deserves it more than Jeter.

Laura, Manny Stats are better, but you are missing the point. It is "Most Valuable Player". And there is no other one in our team than David Ortiz. He hits when it counts the most. Without Ortiz, We would have been out of the playoff race long time ago.

Many writers are already saying they are voting for Ortiz. So it is David Ortiz.

Sorry Laura, I read your answer again. It seems like you are going for Ortiz.
