I'm moving house in two days and would like to make it as painless as possible.

Any ideas?

I suggest that you move your own stuff. Get your friends to help, if possible. "Professional" movers often turn out to be unprofessional.

Have a moving party with plenty of beer and pizza. moving is never painless. Face it, it is a back breaker. But the more people you have to help, the better! Make sure you label all the boxes (bedroom, kitchen, etc) It makes it so much easiler when you go to the other place that each box is placed in the room that it should go into and it will save you a lot of trouble later from having to find everything. Glasses and dishware requires alot of padding. Unless you are moving just around the corner. Leave the clothes last, to fill in gaps

Label/seal your boxes with colored electrical tape. Red for fragile items, blue, green, yellow and white for other things like kitchen, bathroom and garage. This way you don't have to read each box, just check the color.
Invite friends to help, have pizza, stay hydrated. Try and gather enough people to make a fire-line to the moving truck.
Move the large items first and pack other things around them.
Do not lay appliances (refrigerator/freezer/washer/dishwasher) on their sides, backs, etc., unless you don't plan on using them for at least 48 hours.
Make a thorough check of the walls/floor/ceiling when done, make sure you are aware of any dents, scratches or marks.
Leave closet doors and cupboards open till the final walk-through so you don't miss anything.

Put heavy stuff in small boxes and light stuff in big boxes if possible.
Towels can be used to wrap precious objects -- like mirrors, framed pictures, etc.
Label all boxes with large letters and be specific about their contents as well as their location (Example: Bedroom - Closet Shelf 1). When you get to your new place, you'll be able to put things where they belong quickly and easily.
Put the things you are going to use first (like tools or simple dishes for eating) into the moving truck last. As soon as you arrive at your new destination, set these boxes aside and carry out the rest of your stuff.

Finally, get some strong men to help you out. Let them carry all the heavy stuff, like couches and pianos and whatnot.
Ask them to work with their shirts off if they're good-looking.

Oh, that only works if you're female, I guess. LOL

Plan what you'll need immediately-- i.e. sheets for the bed the first night-- pillow-- towel and washcloths, shampoo, bar soap or body wash-- pan to cook dinner in-- coffee pot-- paper plates or not-- silverware or plastic ware. If you take pen to paper you can figure out what you must have! and make sure you can find it easily --Spritz of cheap white paint on the box-(outside the house please-- it'll dry quickly)- three sides of the box.

All this is so you can take a shower, eat dinner or breakfast, have clean clothes to wear and go to bed the first night without screaming!

Make sure everything is boxed up and labeled.
Use trucks or a moving van.
