This question is the source of some major drama at school right now...can someone please clear it up and if possible give reasons, and, better, references? Thanks.

The simple answer to your question is concentrated. Nitric acid is a very powerful oxidizing agent. Therefore, simply stated, concentrated nitric acid would be a better oxidizing agent.

However, it does depend on your definition of "better." Here is what I mean. Concentrated nitric acid is a very, very strong oxidizing agent. It might be too strong for the situation you need. Therefore, in your case, dilute nitric acid might be the "better" choice.

There is the saying..."Too much of a good thing can be bad." This is sometimes the case with concentrated nitric acid.

Good luck with your debate in class.

Oxidation is the removal of electrons from an element, ion or compound (molecule) An occasion of oxidation may be "can the acid dissolve steel".? If a steel is switched over type its "well-known" steel state to its ions (dropping electrons), it extremely is been oxidised!! It would not rely if the acid is centred OR dilute. If it may dissolve steel this is an oxidising acid! If an acid reacts with a base, it extremely is no longer often oxidation, fairly neutralisation that occurs. Oxidation will take place IF the ionic state of the backside is altered. (e.g. Fe2+ to Fe3+)

Its definitely concentrated nitric acid...The strength of the acid determines its power of oxidation.

concentrated will work better, but it will also eat your flesh. well not really, but when in conact with flesh it nitrates and hurts like hell...
