Cutting edge refers to technology that is the top of the line, barely came out. The same concept can be applied to chemistry. The top of the line in science.

Go to Barnes and Nobles and pick up some magazines. A few that I recommend:
American Science
Popular Science
Popular Mechanics

Cutting edge just refers to anything which was a completely new idea.

For example, cutting edge technology is the most recent technology available and would be particularly innovative..

In the future though, if your teacher gives you homework and you don't understand the title, you should ask that teacher to clarify. It's better than putting a lot of effort into doing the wrong paper.

Cutting edge-- something so current, it's painful? Or maybe something that's very new and unique, not some product/technology/discovery that has been around for a while or is a derivative of something else.

Something "cutting edge" is anything that your professor can 'borrow' and resubmit to the Government to secure a research grant for the University and therefore help him/her reach tenure. Popular topics are those chemicals that develo polymers used to developed superlight advanced tactical fighters or anything defense related. (Just joking)

You're teacher should have been more clear. It just means the newest ideas or something that has just recently been discovered and is being developed or improved.
