We buy a gift for our parents, sometimes the three of us pitch in for one big item, other times just small things. We also buy for all the nieces and nephews because they are all under 5, but that will be come a gift exchange in the future between the cousins. All the adults exchange names and there is a $35 limit.
On my inlaws side, gifts are only purchased for the kids, as Christmas should be for the little kids to enjoy. Christmas has become too much about buying gifts and not really about enjoying time with family and if Christian, Jesus Christ.

First we must all remember what Christmas is all about. All of my family exchanges gifts for Christmas. We are together on Thanksgiving so we draw names then (we put all the adults in one bucket, then kids in another) each person draws and thats who you buy for. We set a dollar amount. It works out good this way, so everyone don't seem so broke trying to buy for everyone. Also if you don't like this idea (some people want to give each person something) in the past I used to bake cookies or cakes for the adults and just get a little something for the children. You could also make things for the children. I have done that before. There are several ideas, if you would like them just email me..

Everyone who comes on X-mas brings a $10.00 gift , after dinner we read was Twas the night before X-mas. You all sit in a circle with your gift on your lap, as the story is read-every time you hear the word "THE" you pass the gift to the right. When you hear a "Body part like eyes or nose etc.", you pass the gift to the left. At the end of the story you open the gift on your lap. We've been doing this forever and the kids have a ball we can't keep up with the passing half the time.

We don't buy for the adults at all. For the 14 grandchildren we all pool our money together and either the wives or the husbands (we take turns every year) have a shopping day and buy great gifts for all the kids. That way the kids get things they want or need instead of a lot of little things from each aunt & uncle. It has worked very well for 3 or 4 years now!

We tried this last year-the rule was that any gift given HAD to come from garage sale/thrift store/second hand shop, and had to reflect something about the person you bought it for. It was really, really fun and challenging! I purchased a cookbook (used) from a garage sale for a budding chef, and angel figurine for a young collector, LOTS of used long-sleeved Tee's for a construction worker, and so on. Nothing cost very much, some items were less than one dollar, and we all felt like we helped someone else by buying this way. I actually ran into another family member at the same church rummage sale, shopping for gifts, too!

We adults purchase for all of the kids (cousins). However, the family is growing so large even this is becoming quite costly. So we are going to do a gift exchange for the kids only. That will make it much simpler to purchase and much less expensive. The adults just celebrate with good food, wine, and company.

Well, something my family does is a secret santa approach, with the adults, and still buy the kids all gifts. Or we buy the family as a whole a gift (gift baskets with coffee, coco, etc), and the little kids a separate gift. Good luck.

This year I want to start putting names in a basket and let anyone over 18 in our family draw names. Anyone under 18 will all get presents. We alway's buy for parents. For friend's we bake each other something nice; I do 30 day Friendship Cakes everyone loves them. A friend of mine does fruit basket's. I really like that. Another bakes her best brownies. They are great. It is unlimited at what you can do. For the older guy's my husband takes care of them with something cheap, on sale, that they can use.

What we did was draw names and that way we just have one person to buy for. And then we have a white elephan gift exchange accept it would be a good gift so that way everybody would leave with a nice gift and not a bad gift for the holiday season.
