I was wondering why Soap Opera's here in the United States take forever to end their show? I have been watching soap operas since I was in junior HIgh. I still watch soap operas and they have the same old problems and love stories. In some other countries their soap operas only have been seen on television for a few months.

I'm not entirely sure. I've been watching General Hospital for 3 years, I LOVE it...but yeah it's been on for decades.......I think that the characters are very beloved, and as the years go on, new characters are always being introduced and fresh looks are trying to be added as the times change. Instead of having to produce a billion shows constantly, we just stick with the same handful of soaps and they are always evolving. I know that it seems like it's always the exact same stuff.....but really there's always new stuff going on........

my guess is...

A) they want to milk the story for as much as they can... even if they have to bring up old plot points and reuse stories.

B) the actors/actesses need to have a job, without soaps, we would have even more unemployed actors.

C) it makes money. haven't you seen how the soaps have an awards show, a magazine, and the show? heck there is even a talk show dicussing what happens IN soaps like if it was a current news event! enough people watch them that ad execs can make money from all the publicity.

D) they are stuck in an infinite loop. it's been going on for so long that they don't know how to end it.

E) blackmail. someone *must* be blackmailing someone to keep those shows going...

now i'm not saying i hate drama's... i watch japanese drama's and on occasion when i'm stuck at home (caring for my nephew, or with my mom, aunts, grandmother, and sisters [give me a break, they outnumber me a minimum of 6 to 1, okay?]) then i'll watch spanish soaps. of course, the japanese drama's usually last 13 eps, while the spanish ones' usually last 20-40 eps so it's not so bad... they actually have a POINT to the story.

All I know is I've been watching" All My Children" for 35 yrs., there are some characters I wish would disappear, and some I've missed over the yrs. But that's the way of the soaps, which give it the lasting power.
As in life, people come and go into the many adventures that is our life, and I hope AMC never ends.

Thats the idea, so they can keep making the show. There wouldn't be much point in making a TV ongoing series if you couldn't get it to last!

So that people will keep watching, hoping for something to happen, which it barely ever does. I'd stop watching - why watch if nothing ever happens?
